For one family, music had been their life in London and brought them together with like-minded souls. Young Sarah Adams was there when a stranger murdered her father in their shop. His last words were to tell her of a box that he had held for them ever since the death of his wife Elizabeth. Disturbed, the assailant escaped into the nearby streets before he could do any further damage.

Rescued and cared for by their father’s friends, they find, among the papers in the box her father had taken care of, only a beautiful cameo portrait of their mother and her wedding ring. Of course it is the papers which hold a secret. In a manner that a scientist of the time like Gabriel Crowther would employ, they form the evidence from which conclusions can be speculated. Little room for speculation or doubt when the killer and the killing carries on. However, the local dignitaries prefer the easy path of accident or suicide to account for the deaths rather than murderous intent. Above all, the evidence confirms it’s a family matter and there is a harsh price to pay.
