Posing as a freelance reporter, Jay returns to the crime scene and questions the groundskeeper who stumbled across the dead man. Swept up in the moment, Jay divulges a little too much information for his own good.

Then a young black dockworker is savagely beaten and gunshots fired into a family home. Jay takes on the case, prepared to champion the cause of equal rights for black dockworkers. However, such is the danger to his clients Jay calls on his old flame and local Mayor, Cynthia Maddox, for assistance.
